The present theoretical paper integrates three closely related cognitive constructs: maladaptive cognitive schemas, negative automatic thoughts, and cognitive distortions. Drawing primarily on Beck’s cognitive model, the generic cognitive model, schema theory, and contemporary evidence on cognitive bias and repetitive negative thinking, the paper proposes that these constructs operate at different levels of the same vulnerability system. Maladaptive schemas represent relatively enduring structures <br>through which people organize information about themselves, other people, and the future.
